Wednesday, November 15 - Fair Trade Palace and Group Final Dinner
I was the first of our group at breakfast. Consuming two cups of cappuccino, roasted potatoes, Caesar salad, and fresh fruit, J was joined by Agi, and Jean, and Tom. We discussed cars versus public transportation and solar panels.
Vladan arrived, and we ride by small price coach to the Modern Art Museum. We were guided by our presenter Sunday at the Museum of Cubism. A professor of architecture and designshowed us paintings, sculptues, and photos from 1918-1938 and acquired from many museums in the country. They represented Czech, German, and French artists created in the former Czechoslovakia. Paintings of landscapes, still life, daily life. and portraits portrayed the styles of the times, old and new as well as emotions. In our free time I visited the floor with styles of architecture, from block houses to current structures, something completely different.
We returned to the hotel, and I joined a couple friends for lunch in the huge food court for salads and a bit of shopping . A couple hours of preparation for a 4:30 AM departure tomorrow from the hotel and our gathering this evening for a walking tour tour of the famous Charles Bridge and farewell supper there.
After a small coach ride to the Charles Bridge we began walking across this famous stone structure. In honor of Charles IV this is a pedestrian only bridge. A few statues invite tourists to touch for good luck. It was dark and the cobblestones wet, the air was cool, yet mild. Well-lighted, the bridge and neighboring buildings shimmered in the river. No wonder this bridge is considered one of the major tourist attractions in Prague.
Our farewell supper nearby began with fresh pumpkin soup, and the flavorings were a tasty addition, the main course consisted of the most tender pork I have ever eaten. With a light sauce and mashed sweet potatoes I cleaned my plate. Dessert was warm and fresh apple strudel. Vladan gave a message for our eagerness to learn and his joy being our city guide. He then gave each of us a tiny bottle of an herbal liqueur, called Becherovka. It is 38% alcohol, and he suggested we put it into the freezer. That's where it is.
A short ride home in our small coach, and hugs and kind words to each other we parted to finish packing and sleep.
PS. The hotel had prepared for us earliest departure, at 4:30 AM, a sack breakfast of a sandwich, two pieces of fruit, yogurt, a coffee drink, and a chocolate bar. The van btought us, the seven sleepy dwarves, to the airport. There staff were friendly and helpful, and signs were also abundant on our walk through security, two stops for document checking, and lengthy walk to the gate for the first flight to Frankfurt. I was ready to go home.
