Travel Day Monday Wermelskirchen to Berlin
It began quietly, cool and under clouds. We learned that the milk used last evening to make yogurt was going bad and that the batch needed to be discarded. Anja stated that Herbert had gone to the store to buy milk. Three muesli breakfasts were ready. Anja had picked a few leaves of lettuce and a small cucumber yesterday for Karin and me to put into our sandwiches to be eaten on the train. We added tomato and cheese slices to the leftover rump steak from Saturday. Herbert returned with milk and took Naila outside for her early morning walk. We spent some time petting and hugging and saying goodbye to her.
It seems that the time flew and we needed to leave for the Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof, i. e. main train station. It was misting outside. The train station appears new with wide and bright open areas with several stores and a Deutsche Bahn service station where I purchased a nine Euro transportation ticket for Karin and myself. We may use any public transportation in the country except the Deutsche Bahn until the end of the month. Herbert learned yesterday from a friend that the national government wants to encourage people to save money on gas for their cars by enouraging them to leave the cars at home and use a very low cost ticket which is valid for a month. This offer includes international visitors.
The ride on the over 100 mph inter-city express was comfortable. The train was crowded, and some people sat on the floor between train cars. We arrived mid afternoon in Berlin to the very crowded Hauptbahnhof. The signage was good. Instructions from the hotel were perfect. We took two trams and were in the neighborhood of Prenslauerberg and old home turned into hotel. After settling into our fourth floor room we left to get to know the neighborhood. Old and new buildings housed a wide variety of fascinating stores from clothing to personal services to electronics they also had fascinating names. Coffee shops, cafes from many countries as well as beer and wine cafes were in abundance. We located good places for breakfast and supper this evening. Karin found a place where we enjoyed a Berliner Weisse beer. We enjoyed watching people as we enjoyed the uniquely Berlin beer on the sidewalk.
We also sat on the sidewalk to enjoy our supper of Lebanese food with a German twist - pickles slices and pickled jicama and lentil soup. Watching traffic and lots of people on the street in the early event was a special treat.
We walked more in the neighborhood and by our a park where people were enjoying the evening sitting on benches and grass. What I find sad is the huge amount of graffiti on buildings, park benches, statues even. We returned to our room in daylight to ready ourselves to visit much more in the neighborhood tomorrow.
Gute Nacht, Susan
